June 6 Topanga Symphony Concert

Under the leadership of music director and conductor Jerome Kessler the Topanga Symphony gave its 68th free concert at the Community House on June 6. This concert was supported by a generous grant from the Backhus Foundation of San Rafael. This enables the Topanga Symphony to give four free concerts this year instead of the usual three. The Foundation’s president, Stephen E. Backhus, attended the concert and received a hearty round of applause from the audience. Also present were Foundation board members Jeff Backhus and Tom Martin.

The guest artist was mezzo-soprano Claudine Carlson, who has sung with most of the leading orchestras of Europe, the United States and Canada. She gave a stirring performance of “Il Tramonto,” a tragic song by Ottorino Respighi based on the poem “Sunset” by Percy B. Shelley.

The program opened with the overture to Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro” and also included “Arkexit” by California composer J.A.C. Redford and “Serenade in D” by Brahms.

The Symphony’s next concert will be on Sunday, August 29 at 7:30 p.m.
