“Avoiding Financial Disaster,” September 24

Join me on September 24 at 6 p.m. at the Topanga Library for my presentation on “Avoiding Financial Disaster.”

Many households run into financial disaster as a result of factors that are preventable.

Learn how to control the financial activities in your household, how to set realistic financial goals, know what your cash position is at all times and learn how to communicate about your finances to your spouse, your bank and your creditors.

Do you have an emergency fund? Do you fully fund your pension plan? Are you typically paying a large tax bill in April or getting a large refund? Find out how both scenarios can be avoided.

Are your finances being kept electronically on Quicken or Quickbooks or an online service like Mint.com? Learn about smartypig.com (an online savings account service) Do you know your monthly expenses? Does your spouse?

You will learn how to not carry any credit card debt; how to not make impulsive purchases; how to live within your means (and not keep up with the Jones’); learn how to create a monthly household budget and discuss it with your significant other.

Finally we will discuss setting yourself up for retirement. By building a nest egg, investing properly and creating a will or trust for your spouse and children.

Bring your individual financial, insurance and investment questions and I will be happy to respond. Each person attending will receive a financial disaster checklist that will help you get your financial affairs in order so you will hopefully never suffer a financial disaster.

This should be an informative and hopefully entertaining two hours that could change the way your view your finances forever.
