Since the 1960s there has been a gallery in Topanga Canyon, sometimes under a different name, such as the New Canyon Gallery, but the mission is always the same: to promote the arts of the region. Topanga, long known as a haven for artists, writers and musicians, continues to attract creative types and their patrons follow.
Gallery artists come from the Canyon and the surrounding communities representing many different mediums and styles of work. Art is personal and some collectors prefer realistic landscapes and others abstract paintings, photography, jewelry, sculpture, or ceramics. Artists use the gallery as their home gallery where their work is almost always on display.
The artist members own the gallery and serve in every capacity in the running of it. New members are juried in for the quality and uniqueness of their work. Every month there is a new show in the gallery often featuring two members in the front and other member artists in the back. Several times a year there are gallery-wide shows, such as the Holiday Show, the June Studio Tour and a summer-themed show. The gallery also hosts an annual Juried Show and a student art show from Topanga Elementary School.
Membership is kept below forty members to insure adequate exposure for each artist. Since many of our members are full-time artists, membership dues are kept affordable (current annual membership is $560) and the gallery takes a small percentage (currently 20 percent) to offset expenses not covered by dues. Members have assigned roles in running the gallery, sit approximately one day per month and have a voice in the direction of the gallery through meetings and e-mails.
Applications should be received by Saturday, September 13. Jurying will take place in person with the artists and examples of his or her work beginning at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16.
