Saving Toto

Gail McDonald-Tune is a miracle worker. I mean it. A couple of years ago, we rescued a silky terrier mix, an adult dog (10 years) that was turned in by its owner to the Agoura shelter. My friend, Kerry, found her online through a Pet Pardons alert and knowing my soft spot for these creatures, figured that Agoura was not far from Topanga and convinced me to get her out. I contacted Kris Kelly, an animal rescuer with whom I have worked for years, and she arranged pick-up the next day.

Saving Toto

Before her treatment, Toto had skin allergies that were so bad she was almost bald.

After processing the paperwork, I went into the kennel to pick her up. Only then was I told that she was a "nipper" and had a chronic ear infection that left her deaf, and skin allergies that were so bad that her fur was falling out. OMG! She was a mess! The volunteer at the shelter wasn’t sure I would be able to get her into my car but I opened the door and she jumped right in. Two minutes later, on the way to the vet, she was on my lap sound asleep. The vet, a traditional DVM, was great and put Toto (T as she came to be called) on prednisone for her allergies and some antibiotics for her ear infection. Her ears had been infected for so long that they were almost closed.

After her treatment, Toto is healthy and now has a lovely silky coat.

She was a sweet little dog and obviously neglected for some time. I knew that we had to get her off the prednisone ASAP, but once we did, her chronic scratching made us all crazy!

Thank goodness Gail McDonald-Tune lives across the street. We paid a visit. Gail took one look at my tired eyes and another at T, scooped her up, held her close to her face and said, “Okay, are you ready to heal this little girl?”

I was so bleary-eyed from lack of sleep, I probably would have agreed to anything, but I have known Gail for many years and trust her wholeheartedly. We immediately changed her diet—added coconut oil, an assortment of Chinese herbs, liver detox, health supplements...the list was enormous—and began healing T from the inside out.

We started treating her skin with other all-natural topicals. Gail’s knowledge of which organs rule the various illnesses in our bodies is amazing. We touched base every couple of weeks to decide whether to change the routine or not and within about six months her fur began to grow back. Her chronic itching stopped. Although the damage to her ears was severe, even they began to open up.

Gail has performed miracles with this little rat dog, who is now 12. We still keep close tabs on her since she is sensitive to environmental allergens, especially when the pollens kick up.

It's been an amazing process to work with Gail and her healing intuition, that is different with animals than the work she does with humans, as these creatures can’t tell us what is ailing them, where it hurts or how it feels. She truly worked miracles on little T!!!
