Shift Change: Putting Democracy to Work, a documentary film by veteran award-winning filmmakers Melissa Young and Mark Dworkin, tells the little known stories of employee owned businesses that compete successfully in todays economy while providing secure, dignified jobs in democratic workplaces. With the long decline in U.S. manufacturing and today's economic crisis, millions have been thrown out of work, and many are losing their homes. The usual economic solutions are not working, so some citizens are ready to think outside of the box, to reinvent our failing economy in order to restore long term community and a more egalitarian way of life. Shift Change shows several impressive examples of employee-owned enterprises including those in Mondragon (Basque, Spain) and in the U.S. These organizations operate in all sectorsengineering, baking, green house-cleaning, fair-trade food, home healthcare, pharmacies, cab companies, breweries.
They paint a new picture of work, creatively, re-imagined, where employee owned and managed enterprises are not only a solution to many of the difficulties we face, to make a difference, and to contribute toward a society with more fairness; a society in which each individual would be proud to be a part. There will be a discussion about the film to explore how worker owned businesses might save some industries from predatory capitalism.
