“Color” at Topanga Gallery, through March 30

“Toy Airplane” by John Adams will be on display at the Topanga Canyon Gallery through March 30.

Artists John Adams and Toby Sulkin will present their new show, “Color,” by brightening the Topanga hills right from the walls of the Topanga Canyon Gallery.

Adams and Sulkin are mixed media artists looking to celebrate the vast array of popping images we all know and love. Old trucks, old cars, toys, people and highways are going to explode without apology and ask someone which is their favorite color! According to the artists, the answer may change by the minute, as it should.

John Adams loves color. Loves it in life and loves it in art. To him it doesn't just mean something you see, it's something we all feel. We all shine in different colors, each as vibrant as the next. That's why he loves Topanga. Everyone comes at him in their own color, expressing so many different shades of life and inspiring him to create a type of art that captures that eccentric fabric. John is a mixed media artist. Topanga is a mixed media community. Like Topanga, John builds his art with no permits, no rules, he waves his red flag high.

Piling paper on top of paint and paint back on top of paper and adding some discarded tissue on top of some Topanga dirt and then he shines it up with some gloss and glue just to have a little more dirt dropped on it. One can never have enough Topanga dirt. Or color.

A truck by Toby Sulkin, who creates bold, flamboyant and contemporary collage and assemblage works.

Toby Sulkin creates bold, flamboyant and contemporary collage and assemblage works. She is also known as a colorful oil painter. One could say she is a mixed or mixed up artist. After moving from New York where she was doing mostly cubist paintings with drab colors, she came into the sun of Los Angeles and studied with artist Alex Villmusen. He encouraged her to select the bold colors without thinking of the rules. Never being a rule follower in any part of her life, it was a perfect fit, allowing her imagination free reign. She attended Hunter College and Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.
