NAMI Comes to Topanga, Open House, March 25
March 13, 2014 - By Lynn Conrad
A local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), NAMI Westside, is expanding its services to Topanga and will hold an open house at the Topanga Library on Tuesday, March 25, 6-7:30 p.m., to introduce its programs to the community and provide them on a regular basis in Topanga.
Mental illness affects everyone. Nearly 60 million Americans experience a mental health condition every year. Regardless of race, age, religion or economic status, mental illness impacts the lives of at least one in four adults and one in 10 children across the United States. People living with mental illness need help and hope: they need a community that supports them, their families and their recovery.
At NAMI, we say that the best medicine for someone with mental health challenges is strong family support. Through its numerous programs, NAMI helps countless families who are affected by mental illness. Here are just a few ways we can make a difference, together, with the services we offer:
Family-to-Family Education ProgramA 12-week course for families of individuals with mental illness. The curriculum focuses on major mental illnesses, such as clinical depression, bipolar disorder (manic depression), schizophrenia, panic disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). The clinical treatments of these illnesses are discussed and the classes provide the knowledge and skills that family members need to use to cope effectively.
Speaker MeetingsNAMI Westside hosts expert speaker meetings monthly for parents, spouses, brothers, sisters and adult children of people with mental illness.
Peer-to-PeerAn education class for those who have mental illness. Participants in this class will get help with relapse prevention, how to help identify tell-tale signs of impending relapse and more.
Special Support GroupsSelf-help support meetings for any adult who has a family member living with a mental illness.
This important work would not be possible without people who are committed to investing in the community. Ongoing NAMI Support Group meetings will take place the fourth Tuesday of the month beginning in April.
