Free Talk: Make Your Nest Egg Last, March 26

The Canyon Sages will present a free informational talk, “Make Your Nest Egg Last: Strategies for a Sustainable Retirement,” on Wednesday, March 26, from 7-9 p.m. at the Topanga Library Meeting Room. This talk is open to everyone, since it’s never too soon for any generation—from Millennials to Boomers—to plan for retirement.

Jennifer deSpain, a CPA/CFP (Certified Financial Planner) founded Canyon Oak Financial in Woodland Hills and has “quite a few Topanga clients who range from younger families to business owners to retirees,” she says. Using handouts and a PowerPoint presentation, she will discuss the five key challenges we face as we plan retirement—longevity, inflation, health care costs, public policy changes and investment risks—and explain how to put a plan into place. She’ll also cover the question of Social Security: when should we take it and how do we get started? deSpain understands Topanga challenges. She grew up in the Canyon, the daughter of Terry and Harvey Welles, who still make their home here. As a teenager, she went to work for Tom deSpain, owner of Fernwood Market, and eventually married the boss’ son, Mike, who now runs Access Excavating Company out of Topanga Lumber. Her Topanga genes give deSpain a unique perspective to advise other Topangans. She admires the entrepreneurial spirit. Many Topangans are self-employed in the entertainment industry, artists, etc., with unique requirements that she tailors to fit. For example, she created a socially responsible portfolio at the request of one client, who wanted to have her investment portfolio fit her politics.

Come for good information in good company. All this and door prizes, too!
