Valentine’s Day at Old Canyon Ranch

Shawna and Michael Russell exchanged vows at Old Canyon Ranch on Friday, February 14.

Old Canyon Ranch was host to the joyous union of Shawna and Michael Russell, who were married on Valentine’s Day in its magnificent, natural oak tree cathedral. Their story is both beautiful and heartrending as they overcame enormous personal obstacles and built a strong, healthy life together.

The trials of their past brought them together in church one day, and the strength they drew from each other built a deep enduring love between them. Because they were never able to have a wedding, Old Canyon Ranch offered to make their dream come true by donating the venue for the occasion.

The overwhelming love they have for each other brought tears to the eyes of everyone present as they exchanged vows on that beautiful afternoon. Old Canyon Ranch would like to extend a special note of gratitude to everyone who participated in this special event, as their time, money, products and talent were donated for the occasion: Pierre’s Catering Company donated the exceptional meal; Belle of the Ball Floral Designs made incredible arrangements, the wedding party’s bouquets and decorations; Rachael Metz of Tickle Me Sweet created delicious desserts and favors; Jessica of Devande Photography documented the occasion; Reverend Stacey A. Cron performed the beautiful ceremony; Kevin Dobbs with Global Spinners Entertainment enhanced the ceremony and reception with his music; Jaime Lavalle of JaimeCakes donated the wedding cake; and Soltana Mulhearn’s Velvet Alley Events coordinated everything.

The 2.5-acre property features a 250-seat natural amphitheater with hand-cut log seating gently sloping toward a stage covered by ancient oak trees. Winding stone rock walls and steps lead into this secluded part of the property. Adjacent areas and amenities supplement wedding options with flat lawn areas, excellent for a seated reception. Behind the wedding site is a scenic stream with small cascading waterfalls.

Coming by mid-2014 is a glass-walled Wine Tasting Room that will feature a wrap-around porch and stunning views of the Santa Monica Mountains while guests savor award-winning wines. A natural-stone patio with a fire pit and outdoor oven can serve as a center for entertainment, host a rehearsal brunch or dinner or be decorated for a bridal changing suite. Old Canyon Ranch offers wedding planners with an array of options.

An informal picnic area below is dotted with hand-built wooden picnic tables that can seat up to 80 guests.

Meandering walkways edged with a multitude of colors, plants and trees border the nearby landscape nursery.

Old Canyon Ranch, formerly Ribbit Tree and Plant, is located at 301 Old Topanga Canyon Road next to the Christian Fellowship Church at Monte Vista Road. The nursery offers a large variety of sustainable and organic selections to brighten your garden. For information regarding your next event: (310) 455-0800.
