The Topanga Community Club (TCC) kicked off the New Year by adding a season of youth soccer from January through March. Three Topanga parents, Commissioner Lisa Ward, Registration Coordinator Britt Glynn, and Equipment Manager Kelly Rockwell are heading up the program.
The trio took over the leadership of the program late last fall. Weve seen a great response from the community; we had a bit of a rocky start in October but the program is really thriving now, said Ward.
The winter enrollment surpassed the fall, perhaps because of the warm temperatures, or maybe the nature of the non-competitive league that is focusing on fundamentals of the game.
We didn't know what to expect as far as enrollment for this new season. It has been exciting to see so much interest and community involvement, said Glynn.
Ward wants the Topanga players to have a strong basic knowledge of the game to prepare them for larger leagues.
Most important to me is that our kids have fun and develop a love for the sport, he said. This is very much a Topanga community program, and the parent involvement is what makes it special. The spirit of Topanga is in the way we play our games and every game day is a social occasion for kids and parents alike.
The TCC program is not currently an American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) league and has no formal referees. The parents and coaches keep time for the players and rotate players on the teams to keep play fair.
The program has players as young as two enrolled who play in confidence building parent-and-me games. The oldest kids are 10 and play on a full-size field, a bit of a stretch for their age.
The league plays on Saturday mornings through March. Enrollment for spring will open in late February.
