Hospice Volunteer Training, Feb. 28 to Mar. 2 at Anam Cara

TOPANGA, CA—Los Angeles Hospice at Anam Cara is offering an intensive 16-hour course the weekend of February 28-March 2 in Topanga on how to provide comfort and emotional support to hospice patients. The hours are Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The training is suitable for volunteers, professional end-of-life caregivers and others wishing to provide terminally ill people with a peaceful, dignified end-of-life experience. The program may be used for continuing education credit for chaplains certified with the Board of Chaplaincy Certification Inc.

The training will be led by Mitchell A. Metzner, Ph.D., M.Ed., Los Angeles Hospice at Anam Cara CEO and former Los Angeles Chapter director and lead trainer for The Twilight Brigade; and Los Angeles Hospice at Anam Cara CFO, Gabe Gelbart.

"Hospice volunteer training helps participants confront their own fears and sometimes hidden obstructions in our psyche, allowing for a deeper consciousness about being present and bearing witness to the life of another," notes Dr. Metzner. "Sitting bedside as a volunteer or with a personal loved one can be richer and fuller as a result of the training."

The course's learning objectives include:

• What death teaches us about life

• Defining hospice and palliative care

• Natural process of dying

• Empathetic listening

• Being present for another

• Bedside 101

• Support for the dying and loved ones

• Overcoming personal fears and obstacles

• Understanding loss and grief

• Self-care and boundaries

Participants who complete the training will receive a certificate of completion and, as desired, opportunities for being mentored and volunteering bedside.

To defray the costs associated with offering training programs as a nonprofit, a donation of $200 or more is suggested for each participant. However, no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Space is limited and advance registration is required. To reserve a space, contact Dana Bigman at (310) 478-6596 or DanaBigman@AnamCaraLA.org.
