Tree CuttingHelping or Hurting?
October 17, 2013 -
The North Topanga Canyon Fire Safe Council (NTCFSC) may feel its helping make our community a little bit safer by systematically cutting trees but what are the ramifications of the loss of those trees?
The erosion that is sure to follow, loss of wildlife habitat and general scenic beauty are just a few of the perhaps unintended consequences. Without a companion plan to replant trees this project seems less than half-baked.
If there is funding through grants to cut trees down, surely there is funding available to replant the trees that are taken out, right? If not, this is not a sustainable project and Topangans need to take action to learn more about who is funding this project and who is benefitingfinanciallyfrom cutting the trees.
The fire safe group is using fear and misinformation to convince property owners to cut both pine and eucalyptus trees. Where will it stop? Once these trees are eradicated from the Canyon what will be the next target species?
