Hollywood Bowl Video Flap
October 3, 2013 -
This summer I attended a concert at the Hollywood Bowl with my husband and two friends. During the event we were questioned by three over-powering security guards about my friends video camera, which fit the Bowl's published guidelines and had been approved at the entry gate (it did not have a detachable lens or a telephoto lens). Despite our protests, my friend was escorted out by security and her Bowl-legal camera was confiscated for the duration of the concert. She missed 45 minutes of music, was harassed and treated like a criminal. She has a very old camera and all around us were people with iPhones, detachable lens video cameras who were filming the stage at the same time my friend was questioned. I sent a letter to "Jennifer" at Bowl Patron Services with copies of our ticket stubs, credit card receipts and photos of the people filming around our box. I never received an apology. At best, the Hollywood Bowls enforcement of camera regulations is discriminatory, capricious, and out-dated. The harassment upset all of us in a box we saved for and put a damper on our evening. We deserved better treatment!
