Fourth Annual Share the Road Ride, Oct. 5

SIMI VALLEY, CA—On October 5, Soaring Spirits International will host the fourth annual Share the Road Ride, to urge and encourage motorists to share the road with cyclists. The ride is dedicated in memory of cyclist Phil Hernandez who was killed while riding his bicycle in 2005.

“Sharing the road makes sense,” said Michele Neff Hernandez, organizer of the Share the Road Ride, executive director of Soaring Spirits International and the widow of Hernandez. “No driver wants to be the cause of a lost life. My hope is that this ride will remind both motorists, and cyclists, about the need to safely share the roads we all travel daily,”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2011 there were 677 bicycle/motor vehicle crashes resulting in death. That number reflects a nine percent increase over the previous year, and accounted for two percent of all traffic deaths for 2011.

The Share the Road Ride will once again have its start in the DMV parking lot located at 3855 Alamo Street in Simi Valley. The ride start time is 7 a.m., with an official send-off by Simi Valley Mayor Bob Huber.

Once again, the ride will feature three different riding categories for cyclists—100-mile (century) ride, 50-mile (half century) ride or 25-mile City Tour. Along the bike path, Memorial Miles will be featured and dedicated to cyclists who have lost their lives in cycling accidents.

“We are so pleased with the continued growth of this event. We expect about 300 riders to participate this year,” said Hernandez. “Not only are we raising awareness, but we are also providing funding for Soaring Spirits support programs that serve more than one million widowed people each year,”

Sponsors are All Pro Bicycles, TRC Medical and Bellis Reinforcing Steel.

Cyclists may pre-register for the ride online at or sign up as late as the day of the ride. The registration fee is $50 for individuals and $60 for tandem; day of the event the fee is $60 for individuals and $70 for tandems. For more information contact Michele Neff Hernandez at (877) 671-4071. The ride will be held rain or shine. No refunds will be given for registration.
