“A Nobody in a Somebody World,” Book Launch in Beverly Hills

On Friday, March 8, Lorraine Holnback Brodek acknowledged her good fortune as she launched her first book, “A Nobody in a Somebody World: My Hollywood Life in Beverly Hills,” in the Grand Lobby of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, sponsored by her husband, producer Tom Brodek. Thanks to Al Martinez’s Topanga Writers Workshop, his editing skills, her own talent for writing and a non-stop sense of humor, Brodek, a long-time family friend of humor columnist Erma Bombeck, is now a published author.

The book is a collection of humorous stories about growing up in Beverly Hills with tales that travel to Hawaii, Phoenix and, of course, Hollywood. Martinez introduced Brodek, saying, “When she came to me and said, ‘I want to write a book,’ I thought, ‘somebody with that sense of humor and sense of fun might work. Humor is hard; you have to write it very clear and she knew how to do that. This one will be followed by the sequel: ‘Somebody in a Nobody World’.”

Before the book signing, Brodek thanked Martinez saying, “I wouldn’t be here tonight if it weren’t for that man. He’s here tonight because of me. It’s been one of the most fun adventures since the wild pigs (page 166).” The evening sparkled on this rainy night, brightened by Brodek’s laughter and gracious welcome to all who came to support her, among them a number of Topangans from Martinez’s workshop, who may join Brodek as published authors.
