Owners Gidget and Cecil Zapata believe there can never be too much music or places to play and since the store opened at the Old Center plaza in 2010, they have rolled away the clothing racks and opened their doors to musicians and music lovers every Tuesday for an evening of “Unusual Tuesdays,” full of music from local bands and just about anyone who wanted to sign up to play.

“We celebrated our 100th and grand finale of “Unusual Tuesdays” in September with more than 60 performers and had to turn some away,” said Gidget, adding that the event lasted until 2 a.m.

The Zapatas have set “Unusual Tuesdays,” aside for now to bring in a monthly event, "Full Moon Funk Yer Junk" Dance Party, that is scheduled through February and features the local talents of Steel Toed Slippers, the Solutionagenix and The Fergus Show.

Steel Toed Slippers, featuring Will Nicoll (guitar and vocals), Matt Moss (drums, vocals) and Nick Maury (bass), was formed in 2006 after Nicoll and Moss met at their high school in Humboldt County, CA. Proteges of Little Feat, their music fuses Delta blues spirit with singer-songwriter elements and a strong funk vocabulary that made these small town boys sound like they were on to something big. Their first major show was an opening act for Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett of Little Feat and continues to tour major venues throughout the state.

Solutionagenix are locals Terin Ector (lead vocals, bass), Sebastian Harris (percussion, drums) and Lito Magana (lead, rhythm), Pedro Flores (percussion).

“These amazing young musicians, have been playing together since they were kids,” Gidget raves. Their sound, she says, is reminiscent of Santana and The Meters.

The Fergus Show with Noel Rhodes (vocals), Cecil Zapata (bass, guitar), Al Johnson (lead guitar) and Drummer (percussion), were the opening act for Unusual Tuesdays.

Gidget's and Cecil’s love for music is passionate.

“Because the desire for live music is so powerful in this town, we decided to do these Full Moon shows,” Gidget explains. “It’s good to get together with your friends and neighbors, hear some good music and be the community we need to be.”

Gidget also passionately beats the drum in support of local businesses. “Keep us employed,” she implores. “We have such a great diversity of shops right here. If you love Topanga, then shop here.”

Store hours for hillbillyhip: every day from high noon ‘til sundown. Shut on Wednesday.
