“Snakes in the Canyon” Album Release Party, and Shevy Smith, Sept. 28 at Abuelita’s

“Snakes in the Canyon” Album Release Party, and Shevy Smith, Sept. 28 at Abuelita’s

Valleyheart Family Band debuts its new album, “Snakes in the Canyon,” and Topanga local Shevy Smith, creator of Girls With Guitars program, will share the musical bill at Abuelita’s on Friday Sept. 28, beginning at 10 p.m.

When Valleyheart Family Band lead singer, Philip Douglas, sings "I'm on my way to the Top, I won't be stopped" over a rustic bed of acoustic guitars and punchy melodica, it is clear that he and his Valleyheart compadres are bound for success in the gypsy caravan taking them there.

Recorded at VivDog Studios in Topanga Canyon in August, Valleyheart's live offering promises a joyous mixture of rootsy Americana and West Coast reggae. With the recent success of bands like Edward Sharpe and The Lumineers, it seems listeners are more than ever craving the lyrical depth that comes from the efforts of a community. Clocking in at nine members strong, Valleyheart certainly has a wealth of emotions and perspectives from which to draw.

Notable moments on the Snakes album, recorded and mixed by VivDog producer, Mike Bucher, include Kaylee Firestone's smooth vocal execution on "I Believe In Music," supported by the spot-on trumpet riff played by Mike Firestone (Kaylee’s brother in song and in real life) and the razor-sharp writing wit exemplified in "Go Getter."

"VivDog Studios is one of the hidden gems in all of Los Angeles. We are huge fans of their previous work and always knew it was where we wanted to record our live album," Douglas says of the band's affinity for Topanga. "The peace and serenity the Canyon offers was the perfect setting for capturing the laid-back, So-Cal vibe our tunes embody."

The album title, in fact, is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the real life rattlesnake-aversion training that was happening right outside the studio as the album was recorded.

You can catch the Valleyheart Family Band performing live as part of their Snakes In the Canyon album release party at Abuelita's on Friday, September 28 at 10 p.m., where they will be sharing the bill with Topanga local Shevy Smith.
