Outdoor educator Lanny Kaufer leads an Herb Walk on the value of native plants.

Ojai herbalist, naturalist and outdoor educator Lanny Kaufer announces his first Herb Walk in the Los Angeles area after 35 years of leading Herb Walks and Herb Hikes in and around the Ojai Valley.

The Stunt High Trail Herb Walk will be held on Saturday, June 16, from 9 a.m. to noon on the Stunt High Trail in the Calabasas Hills of the Santa Monica Mountains. This will be an easy walk, mostly under the oaks along Cold Creek, with several minor creek crossings.

Please note that “Herb Walks” are short and easy; “Herb Hikes” are longer and more difficult.

Participants learn to identify native and naturalized herbs and discover their many uses for food, medicine, home remedies, survival, crafts, camping, ceremony, and much more. Information will be shared on the ecological value of native plants, sustainable use of natural resources, and other aspects of natural history.

The Stunt High Trail is accessible from the Topanga Canyon area via Mulholland Drive, from Thousand Oaks and the San Fernando Valley by way of the Las Virgenes exit off Highway 101, and from PCH by way of Malibu Canyon Road.

The cost is $25 for adults and $15 for full-time students and seniors 62 and up. Kids 5-12 attend free, one per adult. No dogs.

Registration is highly recommended at herbwalks.com, “Register for an Event,” (805) 646-6281. Once registered, participants will receive an e-mail with directions and all other relevant information.
