Memorial Day Will Never be the Same

Dear Editor,

A year has passed and we will soon be upon another Memorial Day. I just wanted to pass on to Cub Scout Pack 24 and the entire Topanga Canyon community for the warm hospitality shown towards my sister, Janet, and myself last year. No words can truly represent just how special that day was to us. For that short period our Father, Lt. John Robert Caskey, was with us again.

I, like many others I suspect, looked at Memorial Day as the third day off of a three-day weekend. Having lost a Father in war I have felt some shame for that outlook. But no more, thanks to Pack 24 and your community. I now realize that honoring not only our fallen but remembering those that have served and will be serving in the future is equally important!

I know Janet and I will be with you in spirit every Memorial Day to come. THANK YOU all so very much for what you have given us, something that can NEVER be taken away and that can be passed on to the generations of Caskey’s and Pedersen’s to come!

— Sincerely yours,

John R. Caskey II

Dear Editor,

My sincere thanks for the Messenger’s extensive and exceptional coverage of Pack 24’s Memorial Day tribute to the Musch Family’s Military History [see “The Musch Family: Part I – Military History,” Topanga Messenger Vol 36 No 10, (May 17, 2012)].

The Messenger cover is really incredible—you might say it’s Life coming full circle. You made both the Scouts and the Musch [family] very proud.

Also, thank you for including John Caskey’s letter. His heartfelt words, and your touching response, perfectly captured the meaning of Memorial Day. This is truly one project that keeps on giving.
