Soloist for the fall concert of the Symphony's 27th season will include long-time Topanga Symphony principal clarinetist Jim Stanley, performing Mozart's Clarinet Concerto. The concert will also feature Serenade for Strings, by Dag Wiren, and Felix Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 1 in C minor, .
Jim Stanley has also been the principal clarinetist with the Glendale College Community Orchestra; he has performed solo works by Copland and Debussy and has played with the Pasadena Community Orchestra, Crown City Symphony and other orchestras in the Los Angeles area. In addition to his clarinet work, Jim is a chorister, as well as choir director at Church of the Angels in Pasadena for 20 years and has several published choral compositions.
Mozart's Clarinet Concerto is the composer's last work in concerto form. It was published in 1801, ten years after Mozart's death, in an arrangement for the modern clarinet in the key of A Major. The Mendelssohn Symphony No. 1 in C minor was written when the composer was only 15 years old and was dedicated to the Royal Philharmonic Society that premiered the work in London on May 25, 1929, with Mendelssohn as conductor.
Serenade for Strings is by Swedish born composer Dag Wiren. It is his most internationally successful and best-known work.
